The area was first settled in 1897 by Dutch immigrants, said to be attracted to the flat coastal terrain similar to their homeland. In fact, Nederland is the Dutch name for the Netherlands, translating to “Lowland.” The city became incorporated in 1940 and continued to thrive alongside Port Arthur, Beaumont and many local refineries. Today, the Boston Avenue shopping district offers boutique shopping and events, while the annual Nederland Heritage Festival attracts more than 100,000 people over a week of festivities.
