Port Neches, TX

The city of Port Neches, TX, is located in Jefferson County, southeast of Beaumont about 20 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. Port Neches covers 8.6 square miles of land along the Neches River, home to a population of roughly 13,000 people.

Port Neches was once the site of Fort Grigsby, an active Civil War battle spot. The area was first settled in 1834 as Grigsby’s Bluff, then finally became incorporated in 1902. Over the years the city has depended largely on the Neches River as its lifeline for agriculture, timber and oil. The Oak Bluff cemetery is notable as the burial site of singer and actor Tex Ritter.
